Gravesend RFC

5 - 10

(HT 0-7)

Aylesford Bulls RFC

5 from 5 in the league and all is set up for the trip to Westcombe Park in 3 weeks time for the decider. Gravesend didn't make it easy for us and they comfortably had 2/3s of the possession, but thanks to an outstanding defensive effort from 1 to 18 ( sorry Magnus!) the boys got ahead in the 1st half and then never surrendered that lead.

The 1st half was a cagey affair but despite conceding the majority of possession we won the territory battle. Thanks to Harry and Fred controlling the backfield they hardly kicked and our suffocating defence kept them pegged back in their half. The pivotal moment in the first half came when a loose Gravesend kick was returned with interest and after some slick hands and two quick rucks Charlie was sprinting under the posts for a converted try.

7-0 up at halftime and a solid start was required to quieten the home supporters. True to form we fluffed the kick off and very soon Gravesend had pulled a try back. The next 10 minutes saw us play some controlled rugby - nice shape and forwards and backs interlinking well. A cynical Gravesend penalty stopped a promising move, but Charlie stepped up and slotted the penalty. What then followed was remarkable.

Gravesend upped their efforts forcing the Bulls to defend for the remainder of the half. Wave after wave of attack was repelled - Gravesend attacked through the middle, down the blindside and on the edges, but got no change from an incredibly resilient defensive line. Nothing was missed with all the players putting their bodies on the line to stop their line being breached. It's a real testament to the team spirit and the desire to play for each other that they didn't concede. All that was left was for the forwards to force another goal line turnover from which Charlie kicked the ball into touch to seal the W!

An exciting game and a deserved 4 league points. Well done fellas!
