After a nervous start where Medway ran in an early try, Aylesford’s processes kicked in and they started to fire in their hard defensive press and put Medway under solid pressure. With two Aylesford players in the bin for minor infringements, Aylesford continued to pile on the defensive pressure and put in a very solid defence considering Medway had a two player overlap for 12 minutes. Inevitably the pressure told and Medway scored a second converted try to take a 12 point lead.
Just before half time, Mollie Mayhew received a wide pass in the Aylesford half, pinned back her ears, ran through Medway’s fullback, Chanel MacDonald, and dotted down to begin the redress for Aylesford.
This sparked competition in Mollie’s cousin, Yasmin Mayhew, who found a gap and used her superb stepping skills to find the line shortly after. At half time, Aylesford ran in with a small 10-12 deficit.
The second half was heavily contested on both sides, plenty of up front muscle, with scrums turning mainly in the favour of the renowned Aylesford pack. First score of the second half would almost definitely signify who would be victorious on the day, so Hannah Sellman, Aylesford’s bulldozing #8, took the initiative to nudge Aylesford ahead, with Fleur Hopper adding the extras to take the score to 17-12.
Aylesford started to play with more freedom and flair, but the Medway 10, Esme Conway, spotted an opportunity and from an intercepted pass she ran from Medway’s half to score under the posts, which converted gave Medway a 17-19 lead against the run of play.
Not down and out, the Aylesford pack piled on the pressure, and from a series of infringement penalties in the Medway 22, Aylesford continued to win the muscle battle and in the dying minutes of the fixture, Hannah Sellman scored a stunning #8 try off the back of a close quarter’s scrum to seal the 22-19 win.
