It is with great sadness that we write to advise of the death of our old team-mate, Mike Hockey, who died suddenly and unexpectedly on 7th January 2022.
Mike came to us after moving with his job at Whitbread and was recommended to join the club by John Kidson, an honourary Vice President at Linton and Whitbread regional director. He soon became firm friends with our founder Jack Williams and could normally be found in the bar at the ‘Bull’ after training.
He was an old school Welsh back row player who bought all the guile you would expect from that background, ably assisting our younger backer rowers at the time to develop their games. He was always calm and considered in his decisions allowing time to get his breath back before advising the rest of the team of his decision. He brought the missing link that the club required at that time to move the playing style to one which never gave up and always considered the game as being winnable despite the level of opposition.
Always first to the bar and last to leave his value to the club during its early formative years should never be under estimated.
