While the scoreboard may not have been in play this weekend, the values that underpin grassroots rugby were on full display as the club’s Second XV stepped up when it mattered most.
Following the postponement of their scheduled fixture on Saturday, the 2nd XV were left without a game, but not without purpose. Rather than let the afternoon slip away, the squad made a collective decision to pull on their boots and lend their support to fellow grassroots side Leigh RFC, ensuring their match could still go ahead.
Swapping their usual shirts for unfamiliar colours, the players seamlessly integrated into the Leigh side, united by a shared love of the game and a commitment to helping one another. It was a powerful reminder that, beyond league tables and results, rugby is built on camaraderie, respect, and community.
Club representatives praised the players’ attitude and willingness to step in at short notice, highlighting the action as a perfect example of what grassroots rugby is all about.
For Leigh RFC, the support proved invaluable, allowing them to fulfil their fixture and maintain momentum in their season. For the Second XV, it was a chance to demonstrate that the values learned on the training pitch extend far beyond the touchlines.
The gesture did not go unnoticed by supporters from both clubs, with many applauding the players for putting sportsmanship ahead of self-interest. In an era where fixtures are often disrupted by injuries, availability, or weather, the willingness to help a neighbouring club spoke volumes.
Different kits. Different shirts. The same values.
While no points were earned and no tries recorded under their own banner, the Second XV returned home with something arguably more important - pride in representing everything that makes grassroots rugby special!
